It(like anything that gets you moving and getting your heart rate up) will help with weight loss but is only really effective when combined with a good diet or even a modified diet(Ex. you stopped drinking pop and less sugar in diet). Just keep yourself active and be a little carefull about what you eat and you will start to notice change.

these may help …
these may help build your muscle eventually, but they WILL NOT get you six pack abs, nor will they burn fat. all that you can do to get six pack abs is eat less (calories, fat) and do cardio excercise enough to get your body fat % below 15 or 10. after that, you can work out your abs and see your fresh six or even eight pack.

You can’t lose fat …
You can’t lose fat on a certain bodypart. It’s not how the body functions. Diet is the right way to loose stomach fat. Sugar rich food is the worst thing to eat if you wanne loose fat in that area, especially with men. Also stress produces some hormones that gives you a higher blood sugar and therefore more stomach fat.
Yes you will look slimmer and more trimmed with abb exercises but that’s because of a generally increased metabolism that affects all body parts and because of more muscle mass.

Yes it makes you lose fat, but it also helps with Cardio, which is what keeps your heart and lungs healthy.
Everything has a disadvantage though, Gaining muscle, means losing flexibility, and too much cardio means losing muscle, too much flexibity means late-life arthiritis and muscle loss.
But it is as you say, everything must be balanced
